Chances are you think of YouTube, and, although that is a great video sharing site and is the most popular, it is not your only choice. If you want to give your videos a broader reach, you have plenty of alternatives.

You can find many online video sharing sites through a simple web search. Your search will likely also bring up many discussions regarding which sites are the best and the pros and cons of each. Reading a few of these discussions can give you a handle on which sites are most worth your time.

One name that will probably come up frequently is Vimeo, another popular video sharing site that is a good alternative or supplement to YouTube. Version 9 of Apple’s iMovie has the ability to upload to Vimeo (along with YouTube and iCNN) directly from within the program. Vimeo is free to use to browse and watch videos as well as to upload your own. A free registration with the site is all that is required to create your own video channel.

How many times have you heard this? This aphorism has been repeated so often that it has become a cliché—and for the very good reason that it’s true!

An opt-in list is one for which you have captured contact details of your subscribers, which allows you to follow-up with them on a periodic basis. Such a list is essential in online marketing.

Even if your subscribers aren’t interested in your current offer, chances are that they will be interested in something you have to offer in the future. This is why a list is so essential to your success.

This is not to say that building a list is easy. People are wary of spam, so they are leery about giving out their contact information to just anyone. For this reason, it is not uncommon for someone to be in business for a couple of years and have a list of only a dozen or so subscribers.

The web 2.0 marketing powerhouse known as Squidoo is not exactly new. Founded by Mac user, author and marketer Seth Godin, Squidoo, like many other sites, has suffered from Google’s page rank algorithm changes, but it has come back fresh as ever, and thousands of marketers are realizing it’s income generating potential.

As Squidoo’s popularity grew, a lot of people snatched up the plum keywords for their lens (page) titles, particularly single-word titles (“iPad” was probably taken minutes after the device was announced by Steve Jobs). On Squidoo, the title becomes the URL, and each one must be unique. However, there are still plenty of profitable longtail keywords that can be used in Squidoo titles.

Although Squidoo is still popular with Google, there are certain steps you must take in creating your lens if you wish to get a high ranking with the search engines.

1. Do your homework in researching keywords for your lens. A lens will not automatically draw traffic. Your lens keywords are just as important as they are for any other website.

Use keyword tools such as WordTracker or Google’s Keyword Tool External to find appropriate keywords. Keywords that received between 2,000 and 50,000 searches a month are likely your best bet.

Tag your lens with all of the 20 tags that Squidoo allows you. Keyword phrases of 3 to 4 words seem to work best.

2. Put plenty of useful content on your lens. There are no hard and fast rules as to how long your lens should be. It should be long enough to cover your topic sufficiently but not too long so as to bore the reader. Adding videos to your lens (linked from YouTube) can increase visitor retention.

You are allowed to put direct affiliate links on your lens, but don’t overdo it. Even if they are relevant to the topic of your lens, too many could get it flagged as spam and may cause your lens to be deleted. The monetization features built directly into Squidoo, such as Amazon links, do not count towards this number.

You should add at least three relevant modules to your lens. EBay, Amazon, and RSS are the most popular. The latter will add constantly-updated feeds to your lens to keep it looking fresh. Choose feeds that are relevant to your lens and frequently updated.

3. Don’t rely on Squidoo totally to generate its own traffic. Get a few quality incoming links to your lens. This will aid in your search engine rankings. Favor sites that have a page rank of at least 4. EzineArticles is a good place from which to get direct links to your lens.

Other sources of links are the social bookmarking sites, social networking sites like YouTube and Facebook, and classified sites such as Craigslist. And if you have a blog, don’t forget to link that to your lens as well!

Unfortunately, the challenges of generating traffic can make many people vulnerable to the questionable traffic generation schemes that proliferate on the Internet. People want to believe the promises made by the hucksters.

While getting a high volume of traffic is the holy grail for many bloggers and webmasters, even high traffic volume may not be enough. Not all traffic is created equal, and high traffic doesn’t always equate to high sales volume. Guest blogging and article writing, although it entails some work, may be one of the best sources of quality traffic. When someone reads your article or guest blog posts, and is interested enough to click the link to your website, then you know they are interested in what you have to offer.

I even use my Mac’s built-in text-to-speech feature to catch errors that the eyes tend to glance over. Articles that are free of errors will help to establish credibility in the minds of readers.

Now we come to choosing a domain name and a web hosting service. You won’t need this if you create a blog on Blogger.com, but you will find that your options are somewhat limited as compared to having your own WordPress blog or website. There are a number of good HTML website building packages for the Mac, such as RapidWeaver and Sandvox, but you won’t need even this if you choose to set up a blog rather than a website.

You must also choose an overall design or theme for your blog or website. There are an endless number of themes for WordPress, some of them free, some paid, and others asking for a small donation. You should strive to make your site attractive, easy-to-read and professional looking.

One of the easiest ways to monetize your site is through Google AdSense. You get paid when people click on one of the advertisements, whether they actually buy anything or not.

However, while affiliate marketing will be more work than Adsense, it has a greater potential for bigger profits in the long run. My advice is to sign up for an AdSense account, but not to rely on it exclusively. If your site is content rich and abides by Google’s terms of service, you should have no trouble getting approved. There is even free, web-based mind mapping software available. This can be good for allowing users in different locations to collaborate with one another, but it requires the use of Flash which will rule out its use on iPads or other mobile devices.

Mind map software can vary widely in its functionality.
