There are many strategies for Internet marketing and creating e-commerce sites, and one of these methods is called “turnkey.”
There are a few variations on the concept. All of them, however, give you a base or a platform on which to build in your e-commerce efforts. The concept of a turnkey site is to create the fundamentals for you and let you go from there.
Is going with a turnkey site a good or bad move? A lot of it depends on the platform you start off from. However, I think I can save you a lot of money right from the beginning.
The simple fact is that, if you are considering purchasing a fully self-contained turnkey site—that is, one that provides you with the site, domain name and products to sell—you are probably going to have a very hard time with it.
The reason is simple. Your site will be no different from any of the other sites sold by the same dealer. Why would anybody come to your site instead of the others? The problem is there is no easy way to make your site stand out.
Additionally, marketing will be difficult. Some pay-per-click search programs will not allow you to list the site because only one listing per affiliate program is allowed and they will count the turnkey site as a duplicate. You will also likely have difficulty obtaining search engine rankings because you’ll have a limited ability to change a site.
For these simple reasons I suggest you avoid turnkey sites.
The alternative is to use one of the online site builders. These allow you to control your site’s design, though they do require you to have a domain name as well as your own products or services.
It doesn’t matter what computer platform you use. These online site builders will work equally well on Mac or PC, although you may have to experiment with different browsers to find which works the best. You can find some incredibly flexible page builders on the high-end that include databases that cover everything from inventory tracking to customer service management. In most cases they can even be customized to fit your own requirements.
These online site builders may well be the best option. The days of learning HTML and hammering out page code has gone the way of the command line interface. The online site gives you flexibility, control and convenience. This allows you to concentrate on learning the market and how best to promote your site. You may need to tweak some minor elements of HTML from time to time, but nothing that advanced.
A turnkey site may sound like a good idea at first, but it can cost you if you choose the wrong package. Make sure you understand what you are getting into before you commit to any one solution.
